A spectacular array of over 1,000 classic cars, scooters, and motorbikes pack Harpenden Common for the annual Classics on the Common, one of the UK's largest one-day classic car events! Visitors can expect to enjoy a wide variety of cars at the event, with everything from 1913 model T Ford and a 1916 Stanley Steamer, to Rolls Royces and Maseratis making appearances in past years. The event is free to attend, though donations are encouraged.

The classic vehicles arrive in two main tranches from 11.30 a.m. and from 2.00 p.m. Most vehicles are in position from 3.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. when the first vehicles may leave.

Each school holiday we run Storyboats for younger children. This is a gentle 40 minute cruise down the River Gade to where it meets the Grand Union Canal, with wildlife spotting while listening to stories. The books we read a picture books, so the audience can spot the hidden elements and learn about new creatures. Suitable for ages 4 to 8 years, it is the ideal way to fill time between the more costly holiday outings. We feed the waterfowl we encounter and if we are very lucky we see the kingfisher.

We run special themed boats at Halloween and Christmas, with goody bags and an extra special passenger in a red suit at Christmas.

All children must be accompanied by an adult, all passengers must have a ticket. Tickets can be purchased from our website.

Join us for a night camping under the stars and connect with nature as the nocturnal wildlife awakens on the reserve.

The Big Wild Sleep Out is a unique opportunity for families to spend a night out in the wild!

Arriving late in the afternoon there will be time to pitch your tent before heading out for pond dipping. After dinner (bring your own or join us for a fish and chip run!) we'll have a walk around the reserve with bat detectors as the sun sets and learn all about the nocturnal wildlife of Rye Meads. We will then come back to the Visitor Centre for a hot chocolate before falling asleep to the sounds of night-time nature. Well, at only £5 per adult and £2 per child (with under 2's and carers FREE!) with lots of outdoor garden fun, a chance to pick something up from the Walled Garden Shop and the opportunity to picnic in the garden or lunch at the Woodyard Café; all the ingredients for a fantastic summer morning for the whole family! And all money raised goes back into the Walled Garden Project helping us to open this wonderful space to more people, and in more ways.

Performed by Imajica Theatre, "Don't Worry...Bee Happy" is an original relaxed and immersive musical theatre production written for a younger audience. This heartwarming tale is a wonderful way to learn more about bees. Filled with positivity and ideas to help the busy little honey bee and our planet. Suitable for 3-8 years - family friendly and an inclusive performance.

Each school holiday we run Storyboats for younger children. This is a gentle 40 minute cruise down the River Gade to where it meets the Grand Union Canal, with wildlife spotting while listening to stories. The books we read a picture books, so the audience can spot the hidden elements and learn about new creatures. Suitable for ages 4 to 8 years, it is the ideal way to fill time between the more costly holiday outings. We feed the waterfowl we encounter and if we are very lucky we see the kingfisher.

We run special themed boats at Halloween and Christmas, with goody bags and an extra special passenger in a red suit at Christmas.

All children must be accompanied by an adult, all passengers must have a ticket. Tickets can be purchased from our website.

Join us for a night camping under the stars and connect with nature as the nocturnal wildlife awakens on the reserve.

The Big Wild Sleep Out is a unique opportunity for families to spend a night out in the wild!

Arriving late in the afternoon there will be time to pitch your tent before heading out for pond dipping. After dinner (bring your own or join us for a fish and chip run!) we'll have a walk around the reserve with bat detectors as the sun sets and learn all about the nocturnal wildlife of Rye Meads. We will then come back to the Visitor Centre for a hot chocolate before falling asleep to the sounds of night-time nature. Harpenden's children and their bears are cordially invited to join Harpenden Town Council at the Teddy Bears' Picnic in Rothamsted Park on Wednesday 5th August, 11am - 2pm. This exciting free to attend event is always popular with pre-schoolers and their families and carers, and is organised to coincide with National Play Day - a national celebration of children's right to play and a campaign to highlight the importance of play in children's lives.

Each school holiday we run Storyboats for younger children. This is a gentle 40 minute cruise down the River Gade to where it meets the Grand Union Canal, with wildlife spotting while listening to stories. The books we read a picture books, so the audience can spot the hidden elements and learn about new creatures. Suitable for ages 4 to 8 years, it is the ideal way to fill time between the more costly holiday outings. We feed the waterfowl we encounter and if we are very lucky we see the kingfisher.

We run special themed boats at Halloween and Christmas, with goody bags and an extra special passenger in a red suit at Christmas.

Light refreshments available. Visit our Museum downstairs in the Signal Box, and see demonstrations upstairs of how the Signalman moved trains in his section of track.

Come and visit the largest preserved Midland Railway signal box in the UK and one of the few preserved boxes that's open to the public and next to a busy main line railway.

Signalling demonstrations are run on the operating floor upstairs whenever asked for. Railway videos and a slideshow of the restoration are shown downstairs, with many signalling items on display, including single line 'tablet token' machines, and other railway-related exhibits.

In the garden visitors can operate working signals and a point; on display are old signs, lit oil lamps, a telegraph 'pole route' and a garden railway.
